What’s up with Ukraine’s media regulation in July 2024?

July was marked by the renewal of discussions on platform regulation among Ukraine’s legislative and executive bodies. While they haven’t yet resulted in any changes in the laws, Verkhovna Rada passed three other drafts influencing media freedom and journalists’ rights in the first reading. The media regulator has also been actively working to protect information space by blacklisting new services and people affiliated with Russian propaganda for war.

The most notable events happening in this period were:

  • the entry into force of all the provisions of the linguistic legislation adopted in 2019;
  • the adoption in the first reading of two draft laws enhancing the guarantees of journalists’ work in war-affected areas;
  • the establishment of the working group on the creation of the co-regulatory body in the sphere of print media.

This series of digests provides an overview of the proposed and adopted legislation in the spheres of freedom of expression, media regulation, privacy and data protection, Internet regulation in general, and the activities of the National Broadcasting Council in the area of Media Law implementation.

As usual, the digest contains references to the documents discussed in the previous issues of the digest and provides a follow-up to the acts and events described therein.
